APRIL 19, 2010 – It was a Dr. Seuss weekend – a pair of pleasant, temperate days in which one gazed amazed at a dozen things to do. Instead “Great Day for Up!” by Seuss, we marveled as the weekend kept outdoing itself as a “Great Time for Fun!
On the heels of the Great Snow of 2010, the hint of spring in the air over the weekend turned our thoughts to summer. In turn, we wondered what kind of activities we’d offer to our children in the season of Lowcountry heat. As always, there are a lot of things kids can do besides watching TV or playing outside: swim teams, Vacation Bible Schools, school-based camps, baseball, hiking, camping and more.
FEB. 8, 2010 — American photographer Walker Evans is remembered, in part, for his iconic Depression photographs of three poor, tenant farming families in Alabama in 1936. Published as part of the 1941 book, “Let us now praise famous men,” Evans piercing photographs portrayed barefoot children, their worn mothers and their tired, sunburned farmers with pained, pained eyes. …
